Starting KRU – now there’s a thing …
It wants to go, so badly, it wants to fire into life, it tries hard.
But it just can’t get up the final spark, the last push into full revolutions. That frustrating sound all car owners recognise, the spirit is willing but it just won’t start. To be fair we were warned – but it was an auspicious start (or not as the case may be). So we persevered and just as the battery was crying enough KRU gave in and burst into life.
That’s better; a Grp A engine with all the trimmings and it sounded good. No misfires, no hesitation when running, just a desire to get going and attack some stage somewhere.
Jon had problems keeping it on tick over. Another cautionary note from previous owners Lewis and Ian – the camshaft was pretty demanding. Too right. A quick run up the adjacent (private) track and the Skoda went well until revs came off, then it spluttered and died. Frequently. Back to the barn where a hastily called case conference ensued and it was felt by the mechanic-type people that the camshaft was too top end, too much focussed on revs and in the end too difficult to drive at high revs constantly. How Lewis drove so well is a mystery. Fair play to him.
So KRU is no sooner here than she’s off for a make-over; on the shopping list a stage 2 or fast road camshaft and retune.
Watch this space.
